Cota or Navajo tea, also known as greenthread, Hopi tea, or Zuni tea, is a medicinal herbal tea native to parts of the Southwest. Our cota is wild-harvested here in New Mexico. Used by indigenous peoples for centuries, this tea has a mild, earthy flavor.

Cups Per Package

This luxury loose leaf tea is carefully blended and packaged by hand in a reusable tin or a resealable kraft bag. Our 2 oz. tin or kraft bag makes approximately 35 - 40 cups of tea. Our 4 oz. kraft bag makes approximately 70 - 80 cups.

Ingredients

Cota Navajo Tea (Origin: New Mexico)

How To Brew Cota Navajo Tea

Use 1 heaping teaspoon per 6 oz. water. Heat water to a full boil. Steep for approximately 5 minutes.

We recommend using a teapottea infuser, or tea filter. These brewing methods give the tea leaves enough room to expand as the tea steeps, resulting in a richer, more flavorful cup.

More About Navajo Tea

Navajo tea goes by many names, and is also known as cota, greenthread, Hopi tea, Zuni tea, and more. This medicinal herbal tea is native to the Southwest. In addition to being consumed as a tasty and healthful herbal tea, cota is also sometimes used to dye clothing and other fabrics. This herbal tea isn’t related to the camellia sinensis tea plant from which black, green, and other types of tea are produced. Instead, it comes from a species of thelesperma, which is a genus of the sunflower family.

Our cota is locally sourced and wild-harvested on Navajo lands. Cota thrives in the high desert climate of New Mexico, and can also be found in other parts of the Southwest.

Totally-- totally unique!

This tea takes me back to childhood when the teas were sometimes made using the wild plants grown in unexpected gardens and places...It has a uniquely fresh-grown taste. And it's a refreshing change to a sweet, wild grass that conjures up for ME, the JOY of seeing a tiny bird's nest in a huge saguaro landscape--one of my favorite things to watch for when I'm out West. "A propos" for this to come from SANTA FE's LOVELY Artful Teascapes--a FUN, PLAYFUL TEA!!
